I recently spent a week on vacation in Washington, D.C. My boyfriend and I crammed in as much sightseeing and museum touring that we could (can you have a museum hangover?) and ate at fabulous restaurants (Sonoma, Jaleo, Sushi Go Round and Tapas … if you go to D.C., check them out!). We stayed at The Liaison, a hotel in Capitol Hill, which was convenient for being close to Union Station, the Capitol and the Library of Congress. What I didn’t realize before the trip was that while walking around Capitol Hill and other areas of the city, I would notice certain fashion trends dominating the streets.
Skinny jeans are popular right now, and I saw a lot of them while in D.C. The type of shoes I noticed the most? Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars. It’s a casual look that works and is a great change from wearing heels or flats (although those are cute options, too). But … I hate to mention it … athletic shoes with skinnies? Yikes! If you have a long day of travel ahead of you (as the woman I saw at Union Station may have), please don’t try to force your trendy, skinny denim to work with a pair of clunky athletic shoes just to be comfortable. Unless you have laundry to do and your dog ate all your other shoes …
Grecian inspiration on the feet. Metallic. Black. They were strappy, and they were everywhere. Women were rocking the gladiator look, and from the looks of things, they couldn’t wait for summer. The temperatures were in the 70s, and it was time to break out one of the hottest trends. After seeing so many different looks with Grecian-inspired sandals, I’m definitely drawn to this style.
BLACK. Maybe it’s the conservative dress that goes with a politics- and networking-heavy city, or maybe it’s because it goes with everything — black was the color I saw the most. As a person who wears a lot of black, especially on workdays, I can say that D.C. is my kind of place. In fact, while walking around the Capitol in my black trench coat with contrast trim, black-and-white polka dot top, black cardigan, bluish-grey jeans and black flats, a friend of ours looked at me and said, “You blend in.” Maybe it was because my camera was in my coat pocket.

Next up: Style from museum shops (What? I didn’t have time to shop anywhere else!). You may be surprised …
