Jaime’s Must-Read Blogs: Broke & Beautiful

May 20th, 2009 by Jaime in Jaime, Website Reviews, anything goes, denim, fashion

Hmm… I’m sensing a trend with these blogs; but, what can I say? I love gorgeous clothing (and accessories, housewares… the list never ends!) and some of my favorite blogs definitely relate to that aspect.

BrokeandBeautiful.com is no different in that respect… but in so many other great ways, Elle has her own amazing flair that just shouts out at you (in the sweetest, prettiest shout, of course) so you absolutely MUST listen.

First off: Elle has a great sense of the dramatic when it comes to style. She just makes that dramatic… well, she makes it more affordable.

Take her “Eye Candy & Indie Genius” posts (the latest of which features the most AMAZING, cute and fabulously cheap rings!). Perpetually adding to her “street cred,” BrokeandBeautiful.com is a wealth of information when it comes to both the best independent fashion bloggers (of which she is one herself) and the cutest indie designer pieces available today.

But, what do you really read the blog for? Elle, through and through. The girl’s got good taste, a great sense of humor… but she’s an indie fashionista to the core. A Chicago-based style maven, Elle posts some great blogs about her own outfits and style (there are little bits and pieces of her own personal taste that float everywhere around the site itself, like the “Contemplating Murder for” section, which has the most amazing pair of 80%20 wedges in them), high-end brands be damned. She’s not a label whore, she’s a… well, she’s a style whore. But she goes with what works for her, and that’s a trait to be envied these days, where everyone is wearing what everyone else tells them to.

This girl looks good, period, whether she’s rocking a great eco-friendly top (and, by the way, I absolutely want to see her in a pair of Aristocrats. They are calling her name, I just know it) or her favorite pair of Gap jeans (yes, I know, I think I just broke my oath to the denim gods…).

But the coolest part about Elle (not counting, of course, the fact that she’s an RTC lover herself!)? Her ability to weave a story. Here’s an excerpt from her “Let’s Talk About the 90’s” blog:

Growing up, the biggest temptation I had did not involve my age-appropriate candy, mixtapes, or coloring utensils… But my older sister’s closet. As the older sister, she was the pinnacle of style, attitude and cool. The days when she’d purge her closet to make a Value Village donation were the best days of my life, and when I inherited the maroon, v-neck sweater that she wore so well, I probably wore it every to every-other day, religiously.

However, when I wasn’t actively trying to access her closet (likely after a few too many “MOM! She’s trying to get into my ROOM AGAIN!”s), I listened to my other idols on the radio: Courtney Love, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Gwen Stefani in her rockin’ No Doubt Days, and the ever-dreamy Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

I coveted the idea of combat boots (ask my mom! She finally caved when I was 15), frilly dresses and fishnets, deep red lipstick and leather jackets, layered eyeliner and porcelin skin – I wanted to be a 1990’s super girl.

She’s funny.
She’s stylish.
Pretty much… she’s you, only with her own kickass blog. Go check it out.
