If you ever plan on visiting San Diego, aside from the pretty beaches, bustling city, and exciting nightlife you’ll find here, you should also make time to just indulge in San Diego culture. What better way to do that then by visiting a museum? Featured here is one of the more popular San Diego museums.

Maritime Museum of San Diego

Founded in 1948, the Maritime Museum of San Diego has a reputation for housing, restoring, and maintaining historic ships of all shapes and sizes. They house the world’s oldest active ship, The Star of India, as well as smaller, inactive vessels such as 1898’s The Berkely, the 1904 Medea, and the 1914 Pilot.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego has been given some of the most prestigious awards as well. The Guiness Book of World Records has named The Star of India as the oldest active sea vessel, and it has also received The World Ship Trust Award, for being one of the most historically prestigious ships known to man.

They are open every day of the year and general admission is $14.00 which will grant you access to all the historic ships and their exhibits. The Pilot and The Californian are separate fees. The Californian is a four hour “adventure sail” where passengers will experience sailing at its finest. They will be given opportunities to “man the helm, haul and line, and even do a farewell cannon salute”. For $42, its definitely worth it.

Getting married anytime soon? Want to have a San Diego Destination Wedding? What better way to have it then on the Maritime Museum’s Berkeley? This 1898 ferryboat is available for both a wedding and reception. Complete with open air decks, a dance floor, and Victorian-esque detailing, it could be any girls’ perfect wedding.

The Star of India also offers wedding ceremonies which is a unique way to say “I Do”. A unique tidbit? This vessel is supposedly haunted and some tourists have claimed to hear mysterious voices talking to them when they were aboard the ship. Don’t believe in ghost stories? Visit and find out for yourself if the tales are true!
