Influenced Fashion: the 90s

March 2nd, 2009 by Laura in Laura, Photos, Red Tag Crazy, anything goes, fashion, red tag crazy blog

Following the ridiculousness of the ’80s, it took a period of grunge in the 90s to cure and cleanse the fashion world and its Gen Xers. When they emerged on the other side, they decided to look back. Many women had been collecting vintage clothing passed down for years, and they were attracted to the more feminine styles from the early ’50s and ’60s rather than the overtly sexual ’80s looks. These looks were popular for every age, as they started to show up on celebrities like Winona Ryder and Sharon Stone. read more…

Influenced Fashion: the 80s

Ah, the 80s. The beginning of so many good things, including yours truly. Al Gore invented the internet, Michael Jackson invented the moonwalk, Alan Moore invented Watchmen (holy cow, I really want to see that movie), and Gene Roddenberry invented Data (can you tell by now that I’m an enormous geek?). It was the era of big money and big everything else, and when you think big, you think America.

Influenced Fashion, Part 3: Students and Psychedelia

February 26th, 2009 by Laura in Aude, Laura, Photos, Red Tag Crazy, linQ clothing, red tag crazy blog

While doing my research for this blog I came across a truly terrible memoir called 1970s America – An Indian Student’s Journey. I’m sorry if you know this guy or ARE this guy, but I have to say, it was badly narrated, full of strange irrelevant details (and skimping on actual useful details), and dotted of offhand racist remarks. Certainly not everything about India is worth emulating, and the last thing America needs is to view people in terms of their color more than they already do. It was actually too easy to isolate myself, as I came from a family of Catholics, looked faintly Italian (no longer), and had a Portuguese/Brazilian last name. My ancestors came from Goa, a tiny region of India that was colonized by the Portuguese in the 1500s and stayed Portuguese until 1961, 15 years after India became independent. Hence the last name and religion. My parents grew up speaking primarily English, and spoke almost nothing else when I was growing up. So actually, even if I’d wanted to go deeper into my Indian community when I was young, I had the enormous disadvantage of not knowing any Indian language. I still haven’t forgiven my parents this.

Fashion’s Foreign Influences (Part One)

February 24th, 2009 by Laura in Laura, Photos, Red Tag Crazy, anything goes, fashion, introductions

Hi everyone! My name is Laura, and I’ve been a lurker on RTC for a few weeks, but recently I’ve been inspired to come out of the shadows. I love RTC for the same reasons many of you do-but I’m not going to go into that here. There are other bloggers who do a great job of that already! Speaking of blogs, the RTC blog is unique, I think, because of its variety, and yet every day I’m sure to find lots of entries relevant to me.
