Kristen’s Last Wine Blog

June 4th, 2009 by Kristen in Kristen, Wine

As many of you are aware, my life has been (at best) crazy lately. My intent had been to continue writing blogs for RTC once things settled down. However, I have come to the conclusion that I will no longer be able to do so. At some point, I hope to have my wine blog up, but I suspect it will be some time. If you would like to know when it is live, please email me at kristen@sipaday.com and I will add you to the mailing list.

Kristen’s Quick Wine Course Quiz

April 17th, 2009 by Kristen in Kristen, Red Tag Crazy, Wine, red tag crazy blog

A looooong time back, Jaime asked me to write up a blog on why I’m taking my wine classes and how/if I felt they were helping. It’s taken me a while to get to an answer for that question because, well, the classes have been a big hungry wolf on my time. And the question won’t be simple to answer. But I’m going to attempt to give it a go in a couple of upcoming blogs.

March 21st, 2009 by Kristen in Humor, Kristen, Red Tag Crazy, Wine, red tag crazy blog

Don’t you hate it when you have to buy a gift for friends who “have everything”? It’s even worse when those friends are wine lovers. You want to feed that passion, but it’s impossible to know what bottles of wine they already have in stock, or which wines they’ve tried and liked or didn’t like. It’s a minefield. So stop tiptoeing through it, and snag one of these gifts instead. They’re guaranteed to bring a smile to their faces – and yours.

How to: Use Up Leftover Wine

March 18th, 2009 by Kristen in How To..., Kristen, Red Tag Crazy, Wine, anything goes, red tag crazy blog

Nothing is more annoying than spending money on something and having it go to waste. Yet it happens all the time. We misjudge what we need. We misjudge our time. We don’t get the chance to finish what we started. Waste is sometimes a side effect of our crazy lives. And wine is no exception.

Step Out of the Box by Stepping Into Boxed Wines

March 15th, 2009 by Kristen in Kristen, Red Tag Crazy, Wine, red tag crazy blog

The wine world is full of new and amazing inventions nearly every day. Necessity breeds it. Not too long ago, it was unacceptable to use machines to do any wine cropping. Australia and other remote countries didn’t have much choice, however, due to lack of harvest labor. So they led the pack in inventions and soon their mechanizations became acceptable around the world, even in traditional areas such as Bordeaux.

An Assessment of Bulk Wines

March 14th, 2009 by Kristen in Kristen, Red Tag Crazy, Wine, anything goes, red tag crazy blog

Yellow Tail. Blackstone. Cook’s. Covey Run. Inglenook. You see these wines pretty much everywhere. In gas stations, in the grocery store, even in Sam’s Club and Costco. They are just a few examples of what are known as “bulk wines” or “mass produced wines”. For most of us, these wines are the first things we ever tried. But what is their place in the wine world? Are they simply crap to fill shelves? Or are they decent of examples of every day wine?

Everyday Food & Wine Pairings, Part Two

March 13th, 2009 by Kristen in Food, How To..., Kristen, Red Tag Crazy, Wine, red tag crazy blog

In my last blog, I mentioned that Americans have started to accept wine in the same way most of the rest of the world does, as an everyday enjoyment, a staple of the evening dinner. As it turns out, I was both wrong and right in that belief. In my wine class last night, I learned that we aren’t just starting; we have officially surpassed the rest of the world in importing wine per capita. So the acceptance has already taken place; it’s just a matter of learning how to use wine every day in the same manner as the rest of the world. I admit that this might be a little difficult, since they are hundreds of years ahead of us in pairing experience. But what we lack in experience, we certainly make up for in creativity. Just check out any number of our country’s wine and food magazines. You’ll be amazed by, and drooling over, what you find.

Kristen’s Top Ten Everyday Food & Wine Pairings, Part One

March 10th, 2009 by Kristen in Kristen, Red Tag Crazy, Wine, anything goes, red tag crazy blog

In the past, wine had gained a reputation for being a special occasion or weekend treat, a restaurant option only or something brought to dinner parties as a thank you gift. Slowly, it’s outgrowing that reputation and the American philosophy on it is catching up with the rest of the world. It’s becoming acceptable to buy wines for everyday consumption (in moderation, of course). And it’s even being matched to everyday foods, something I’m a huge fan of, since I don’t relish cooking fancy meals mid-week after a long day of work. To hasten this wine redefinition, I’ve decided to share my Top 10 Everyday Wine Pairings with you. The first five are below. Enjoy!

Food and Wine: Finding the Right Match

March 5th, 2009 by Kristen in How To..., Kristen, Red Tag Crazy, Wine, red tag crazy blog

Food and wine pairing is an art. Scratch that. It’s an enigma buried deep within a pair of loaded dice. I would love to say that with a lot of time and experience, you can nail your food and wine pairings every time. But the reality is, I’ve been to restaurants where experienced sommeliers have given me bad advice. Does that mean it’s an impossible task that should only be attempted by wine savants? Hardly.
